Summertime means road trips and vacations; so having the knowledge to prepare and maintain your car’s overall well being this time of year is super important! So before you go, here’s a little insight to keep your car up to speed (no pun intended).
What causes a breakdown?
There are a million and one reasons your car could have a breakdown. The most common is anything to do with your fuel injection system, engine, fuel system, generator, cooling/ac, starter, wheels and tires, body work, ignition system or flat battery (whew)! If you’re seeing signs (hearing strange noises, weird smells, etc.) then take your car to a professional immediately!
How do I avoid a breakdown this summer?
- If you aren’t one to make a lot of long journeys, charge your car battery overnight once a month.
- Keep a close eye on your tires. Check for uneven wear and tread depth, and make sure your spare is fit for the road.
- Don’t wait until the last second to fill up your fuel. Seeing how far you can go with the gas light on is never good for your car!
- Don’t ignore warning lights. If any maintenance required light pops up, seek help! Seeing is not believing in this case; there are plenty of problems that could pop up internally!
What should I do if I break down?
Step 1: Find a safe place to stop and put your hazards on to let people around you know your situation.
Step 2: If you’re on a shoulder, move away from the road for safety.
Step 3: Call your breakdown company and request assistance. Tell them as much detail about the situation as possible (i.e, location, vehicle type, persons involved, etc).
