DIY car maintenance isn’t just fun: it can also save you a ton of money. But before you get busy working on your vehicles, remember to keep safety in mind. Check out some garage safety tips for the DIY car mechanic:
- Fire Safety. Lots of car parts and fluids are flammable or even explosive, so make sure you practice good fire safety. Never smoke while you’re working on your vehicle, or let anyone else smoke in the garage. Keep open flame away from solvents. Keep a fire extinguisher handy and make sure you inspect it regularly and know how to use it properly.
- Fluid and Chemical Safety. Protect your eyes and skin with the proper equipment to avoid burns or worse (remember: your regular glasses will not protect your eyes from caustic chemicals). Many fluids, especially antifreeze, are very attractive to children and animals, so always practice appropriate disposal.
- Other Safety Concerns. Make sure your vehicle is turned off and placed in park with the parking brake engaged before you do any work on it. Don’t forget to let engine parts cool down before you work on them, and always keep your workspace properly ventilated. Tell someone where you’re going and how long you expect to be there so they can check on you if needed.
