Nobody wants to be in this position, but it does happen–you’re driving along, and all of a sudden your engine stalls! What do you do? This can be a terrifying situation, so it’s best to learn what to do before you need to put it into practice.
First of all, stay calm! Panicking won’t help and can put you in more danger. Immediately put on your hazard lights and then get over to the shoulder as best you can. Your power steering and brakes may be out if your engine is stalled, so this could be difficult. Be very careful and watch for oncoming traffic.
Once you’ve safely reached the side of the road, shut down your engine and take a few deep breaths. This will give both you and your engine time to relax and reset. Remain in your car! It is very dangerous to get out of your vehicle on the side of the road, especially on a highway.
Sometimes if your engine stalls it just needs a second to reset, so after a few minutes, try turning your car back on. If it does restart, great! If you’re on the highway, exit as soon as you can. Either way, immediately take your car to a mechanic. If your car doesn’t restart, though, it’s time to call for a tow truck. Again, remain in your car until the tow truck comes.
